Olympics Sevens: Fiji end Ireland's journey as hosts France surge into last four

Ireland saw their Olympics 2024 hopes ended by Fiji before Antoine Dupont led hosts France into the semi-finals.

After losing their pool decider to New Zealand at the death, Ireland held a 15-7 lead against the Olympic champions in their last-eight clash at the Stade de France.

Zac Ward added a try to a Chay Mullins first-half double, but missed conversions would cost Ireland dear.

Iosefo Baleiwariki, Joyi Nasova and Waisea Nacuqu crossed for Fiji and Iowane Teba and Terio Tamani Veilawa added decisive conversions to seal a 19-15 win.

Ireland felt Fiji's winning try should have been disallowed for a knock-on, but the score was not checked by the TMO.

France, beaten by Fiji in their earlier group game, powered past Argentina 26-14 in front of an enthralled home crowd.

Les Bleus stunned the Pumas - bronze medallists at Tokyo 2020 - to take a 21-0 interval lead through an Andy Timo try and Aaron Grandidier Nkanang's brace. Rayan Rebbadj added three conversions.

Argentina fought back as Rodrigo Isgro and Marcos Moneta touched down, but Dupont, the former World Rugby men's 15s player of the year, came on as a replacement to settle the contest with a late score.

New Zealand, silver medallists at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, were surprise quarter-final casualties as South Africa beat them 14-7.

Australia coasted to an 18-0 victory over the United States to set up a semi-final with Fiji.

France will meet South Africa in the other semi-final on Saturday, with the gold medal to be decided later that evening.
