Richie McCaw expects All Black face-lift under new coach Scott Robertson

McCaw told rugby.com.au, "Since 2004, you've had a pretty settled management team with a slight change of coaches. But he'll do things a little bit differently.

"He'll bring the things that have worked in the past, but he's [also] prepared to try things.

"What he does have is a great knowledge of who's around. He knows getting selections and staff right are important, so it's going to be exciting to see what he brings."

Players selected would not need any motivation, as the Rugby World Cup final loss to South Africa would provide plenty of that.

"You make the final and you come up one point short. It's disappointing that you're so close, but yet come up short."

At the same time, good teams like Ireland and France, regarded as potential Cup winners, were sent home early.

McCaw said if the All Blacks stopped being disappointed when they didn't win, they would lower their standards.

Some of the players he had talked to were disappointed, which was natural, but they go into 2024 with a new coach and a different outlook, which would be interesting.

McCaw said he wanted to see Australia come back strongly from its Cup disappointment. New Zealand needed a strong Australia, and he was sure they had the talent to succeed.

"There's no doubt there's talent here; it's just a matter of getting that belief of what they can do.

"From a New Zealand point of view, we want to make sure and see Australian rugby is strong. We need a strong Super Rugby Pacific competition and good battles in the Bledisloe Cup. We all want to see that.

"We both have challenges in other sports. You want kids to keep wanting to turn up and play, and if you get that right, you will have the next wave coming through.

"I'm sure that with a new [Australia] coach coming in, someone will have a vision for that, and he's got to back that."
