Sharks boss on Currie Cup miracle: Jordan's kick will go down in folklore

Sharks head coach John Plumtree hailed the hooter heroics of Jordan Hendrikse who kicked his team to Currie Cup glory on Saturday.

At a bitterly cold Ellis Park, the Durban franchise pulled off a second miracle in as many weeks. The Sharks were fresh off securing an unlikely 40-all draw with the Bulls at Loftus Versveld, sneaking into the Currie Cup final by virtue of more tries scored.

This Saturday, with the clock in the red, the Lions leading by one and possession secured in the lineout, the hosts began popping champagne. But by the darkest of arts, the Sharks smuggled the ball back, ran it from their 22m, and won a penalty just inside their own 10m line.

Hendrikse's 59m bomb split the uprights in the 83rd minute, cuing agony and ecstasy in the stands.

"There's a lot of young players in the team that have never won a Currie Cup," Plumtree told rugby365.com.

"They will cherish this memory and Jordan's kick will go down in folklore. And that's what it is all about."

Speaking to the media afterwards, Hendrikse - who earned his Springbok debut in June and recently joined the Sharks from the Lions - described his process in the moment.

"For me, it was just about staying calm and thinking about the small processes leading into the kick and backing yourself," said the 23-year-old.

"Believe in yourself, head down, pale toe. Coming to Ellis Park I knew fans would go against me, but it was just staying in the moment, staying in the game and just executing what we needed to.

"When it came to the last kick, it was just being in my space, in my mind and just backing that.

"I knew the whole game, the crowd always played a factor in terms of pressure moments and the atmosphere, but you just stayed in your mind and controlled the game."

It's out of the frying pan and into the fire for the victorious Sharks, who travel north for a three-match tour to mark the start of their United Rugby Championship season. They begin with Connacht in Ireland on Saturday.
