The popularity of a sport varies from one country to the next, depending on whether or not it's considered a national sport. For instance, soccer is a popular sport worldwide, while others such as rugby are more niche and popular in some countries.
The latter is a physically demanding discipline that requires strength, speed, and endurance. It is a contact sport that involves tackling, scrums, and rucks, which can lead to injuries. As a result, rugby players need to be in top physical condition and put excellent teamwork on display. Though it has its challenges, rugby is enjoyed by millions of people around the world.
In recent years, it has gained popularity in the United States, with more people becoming interested. The United States Rugby Football Foundation (USRFF) has been working to promote and develop rugby in the country, and the growth of the sport has been impressive. It's also been one of the sports garnering interest in sportsbooks and, given that new markets continue to open up across the country, it should attract even more fans.
North Carolina, for example, passed legislation that made online betting legal in the state this month and new NC sports betting sites are already bringing in hundreds of new signups a day. Rugby happens to be a sport that is popular enough for people to bet on, and not as popular for everyone to jump on the bandwagon. Finding the right bookmaker can be hard, especially online, but many people are able to find them. The sport is likely to become more popular in the United States as the 2031 World Cup will be hosted therein.
There have also been several notable American rugby players who made a name for themselves.
One such player is Chris Wyles, who was born in the United States but raised in England. Wyles signed with a US rugby team called the Sevens and played with them for a while before becoming the captain of the US 15s. He signed with Saracens, an English team in 2008, and played there whenever necessary. Wyles had over 50 international caps, lagging behind only Mike Petri, and helped the Saracens win two European Championships and four Premierships.
Samu Manoa is another notable American rugby player. He began playing rugby with his family at age 13. He was taught by his father and uncle, the latter being a rugby player in Tonga. In 2011, he signed with Northampton Saints and played for them until 2015. Afterward, he signed with French team Toulon, played for three years, then signed with the Cardiff Blues in 2018, played for a year, and then retired. Manoa played for the American national team, having 22 caps, and surprised many when he started playing his first season with the Saints.
There's also Blaine Scully, who played many sports while at high school, such as basketball, water polo, and swimming. He began playing rugby in college with UCLA, before transferring to Berkeley in California, where he played for their team, winning two national collegiate titles. Scully graduated from college in 2011 with a degree in history and began playing professionally, signing with Leicester Tigers in 2013. He played with them for two seasons before signing with the Cardiff Blues in 2015 and playing until 2019. Scully retired in 2020 after an impressive career.
Todd Clever is a retired rugby player who played all over the world, including New Zealand, South Africa, Japan, England, and for his national team, the Eagles. Clever should have the most caps as an American rugby player, making a name for himself abroad and domestically.
So, yes, rugby is a tough sport, but it has managed to make its way to the United States. While still developing, it is a sport with many fans and some stars.
