Toulon bounce back in second half to hand Stormers Champions Cup defeat

Toulon secured a 24-14 victory over the Stormers in an intense Champions Cup Round One clash at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Saturday.

The Stormers led at half-time, but the French side mounted a second-half resurgence to clinch the win.

The match opened with RC Toulon's Gabin Viliere diving on a kick ahead to score the first try. Toulon's scrumhalf, Baptiste Serin, added a penalty soon after.

The Stormers responded with Warrick Gelant crossing the line in the corner, with Manie Libbok converting. Joseph Dweba, marking his 50th game for the Stormers, scored from a maul, and Libbok added the extras. At the break, the Stormers held a narrow 14-10 lead.

The tide turned in the second half as discipline issues affected the Stormers. Willie Engelbrecht was shown a yellow card 10 minutes in, giving Toulon the chance to strike.

Fecundo Isa's try and another by Serin gave Toulon the upper hand. Despite being reduced to 13 men after a red card for a high tackle on Manie Libbok and a separate yellow card, Toulon held firm.

Leolin Zas received a yellow card late on, leaving the Stormers with 14 men in the closing moments.

Keke Morabe suffered a knee injury early in the game, adding to the Stormers' woes. Notable performances included Viliere's opening try and Serin's all-around contribution for Toulon.

The Stormers, despite their promising start, fell short as Toulon capitalised on crucial moments to secure the win.
