Aboubakar the hero as Cameroon shock Brazil on World Cup exit

Cameroon pulled of a shock victory over world number one-ranked Brazil iin their final FIFA World Cup encounter as they bowed out of the competition in Qatar on Friday evening.

The Indomitable Lions captain Vincent Aboubakar netted the only goal of the match to hand the five-time world champions their first ever defeat to an African team at the global showpiece.

With nine changes to their starting line-up, the Selecao were kept at bay by a stubborn Cameroon outfit who were looking to sneak into the knockout stages with a victory, while hoping things go their way in the other Group G fixture between Serbia and Switzerland.

Rigobert Song's outfit ultimately did what they needed to but, unfortunately, the Swiss took matters into their own hands and beat the Eagles 3-2 in a dramatic and entertaining affair at Stadium 974, subsequently sending the African side packing despite their historic feat at Lusail Stadium.

Aboubakar also saw red after removing his shirt in a moment of hysteria as he delivered the killer blow on the Brazilians, after earlier picking up a booking for a professional foul on Gabriel Martinelli, who had been well on his way to a potential goal scoring opportunity.

With Neymar out injured and the likes of Casemiro, Richarlison and goalkeeper Allison, among others, rested, Tite saw his side's 17-match group stage unbeaten run snapped but they managed to retain top spot in the group to set up a date with South Korea in the round of 16.

Cameroon bow out of the tournament with a tally of four points from three matches – their best tally since 2002, when they also registered one win, one draw and one loss.

The knockout stage kicks off with a last 16 clash between Group A winners Netherlands and Group B runners-up United States, before Group C winners Argentina take on Group D runners-up Australia on Saturday at 17:00 and 21:00 respectively.

You can catch the clash between Lionel Messi's Albiceleste and Keanu Baccus' Socceroos  LIVE on SABC Sport, SABC TV, SABC Radio and SABC Plus.
