Speaking after a press conference in Sandton yesterday, where the Motsepe Foundation announced a sponsorship of R150 million to school's football, netball, and choral and indigenous music, Motsepe says the ASL is going to be a game-changer in African football.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns president says they will soon be making further announcements about the competition.
"Very exciting, and we'll be making an announcement in due course. There are lots of discussions taking place. The problem we have at this stage is we are starting with 24 clubs – there'll be some announcements, and we've got about double the amount," said Motsepe.
"There are some big football countries where the quality of club football hasn't been what it had been in the past, and we're trying to encourage them because those are proud football nations.
"Remember, when I leave CAF, I'm going to be judged by, 'Ok, this is where African football was when you came in, where is it now?' I come from the business world, my shareholders say to me, in business, 'We buy your shares because we want you to make money for us. Where's the money?
"So, the same tests will be applied in football. I mean, as the president of CAF, show us the quantifiable, tangible success that has taken place.
"We don't have time for smooth-talk because, in football, when Bafana Bafana plays, if they score goals, they win. If you hit the crossbar or stand on top of the football but the score is 0-0, it's [still] 0-0. We are driven by results so we need to deliver results."
