SABC Sport reported last week that Cape Town City stand to bag around R20-million in transfer fees for the Bafana Bafana international.
His agent Basia Michaels has now revealed that Amakhosi were also in the running for the forward’s services, but were late.
''Yes, there was. Both from Sundowns, as well as Chiefs. I do know that Chiefs had put down a significant financial offer for Khanyisa, a few moments before we penned our deal to CRB. Sundowns did not necessarily fallout, they didn't come to the party if I can call it during this window. It was the window before we signed, Khanyisa had two years left before we renewed, there was interest. So we resigned knowing that we want to make a bit of a financial change to his then situation to open doors to what we call, financial freedom,'' said Michaels.
Michaels went on to add that Mayo would have moved to Naturena had talks of him signing for the North African giants collapsed.
''I do think that had the deal fallen out with CRB Khanyisa would have gone to Chiefs, he wanted what we could call the best outcome for himself. It wasn't the money thing, Khayisa wanted to go to Chiefs there's no question about it, his father played for Chiefs and there's a little bit of heritage there. But he always wanted to leave South Africa, I have been managing him since 2018, he always expressed to me that he will leave South Africa,'' added Michaels.
The agent suggested had Chiefs perhaps acted quickly, although it’s unclear whether they would have met City’s exact asking price, then they might have been able to welcome Mayo at Naturena.
''I think Chiefs fell short because they were seconds too late from the offer that was made by CRB. From CRB Khanyisa does have an opportunity to move into Europe, I am not saying would not move from Chiefs to Europe, but it would be a lot more harder to move from Chiefs to Europe. He would need a season to make a great name for himself and a second season to prove that he is not a one hit wonder and by then he is 27. But if does something amazing at CRB from the first season, clubs in Europe will come knocking for him - there's no question about that,'' she concluded.
Chiefs have not yet given up on luring another player managed by Michaels in Stellenbosch FC left back Fawaaz Basadien.
