This comes in the wake of two high profile players at Stellies leaving for greener pastures following the sale of captain Deano van Rooyen to Orlando Pirates and striker Iqraam Rayners to Mamelodi Sundowns.
Chiefs have been in talks with Stellies for months now over the possible transfer of left back Basadien and it appeared as though they’d given up with SABC Sport reporting that Amakhosi had switched their attention to Riaan Hanamub of AmaZulu, the Namibian international who also plays in the same position.
With Stellenbosch reluctantly selling Van Rooyen to The Buccaneers and Sundowns subsequently triggering the release clause on Rayners’ contract, Basia Michaels suggested it would have been fair to also consider agreeing terms with Chiefs over Basadien.
“But life isn’t fair unfortunately and also timing is everything. However, this is something that we are still actively pursuing although time might not be on our side, but we are working at it,” she explained to the public broadcaster.
While not necessarily forcing his way out of the club, remaining part of the squad in the MTN8 and CAF Confederation Cup fixtures recently, Basadien has expressed a desire to move to Naturena before the close of the window on 20 September.
“Fawaaz has let the coach [Barker] and the Stellies management know that this is an opportunity he wants to pursue. I can’t speak about the happiness of staying – we have to cross that bridge, if we unfortunately get there, but we can all admit that Fawaaz has been a consummate professional scoring two goals in two games,” added Michaels.
Stellies will again be in action this weekend as they face eSwatini outfit Nsingizini Hotspurs for the second leg of their Confederation Cup preliminary round encounter.
They then travel to Sundowns for the first leg of their MTN8 semi-finals on Wednesday and it’s expected Basadien will continue to feature.
