Al Ahly secure CAF Champions League title with aggregate win over Wydad

Al Ahly secured the CAF Champions League title with a 1-1 draw in the second leg of the final against Wydad Casablanca, winning 3-2 on aggregate.

In the 77th minute, defender Mohamed Abdelmoneim scored a crucial goal by redirecting a corner from Ali Maaloul. The ball looped over the home defense and found the net, securing Al Ahly's record-extending 11th title.

After losing 2-1 in the first leg, Wydad seemed poised to win on away goals when fullback Yahya Attiat Allah scored a 27th-minute free kick, giving them the lead in front of their passionate 50,000-strong crowd at Casablanca's Mohamed V Stadium.

Wydad aimed to cap off a memorable season for Moroccan football following their national team's impressive World Cup semifinal run. However, Al Ahly displayed their dominance, avenging last year's final defeat to Wydad and asserting their status as Africa's top club.

With more than double the number of titles of their nearest rivals, Al Ahly's victory solidifies their position as the most successful club in the competition. This marked their fourth consecutive final appearance and their sixth in the last seven editions.

Sunday's final showcased the usual intensity, filled with gamesmanship, referee disputes, and fierce tackles. The passionate Wydad fans created an intimidating atmosphere, generating deafening noise levels throughout the match. The use of flares in the stands caused a temporary pause, but the game eventually resumed amidst a haze of green smoke.

This season reintroduced the two-legged final format after three editions decided by a single match. Last year, Wydad emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over Al Ahly in the Casablanca final.
