AmaZulu coach jumps to Veli Mothwa’s defense

AmaZulu coach Pablo Franco Martin has said the criticism directed at goalkeeper Veli Mothwa following their 2-1 loss to Polokwane City is “unfair”.

The Bafana Bafana shot stopper was again the main talking point when he failed to handle the ball, allowing Rise and Shine right back Thabang Matuludi to net the winner in their Betway Premiership fixture on Saturday.

Mothwa was guilty of the same error while on national duty, but Martin insisted they suffered defeat as a group with the attackers also unable to convert their chances.

"What happened in the last goal is clear that it's a mistake but we also made many mistakes with attacking players and in the end it's the same, whether you are conceding a goal or not scoring a goal," Martin said.

"Today we had four or five clear chances open, we hit the post and no one is talking about the offensive players. So, sometimes I think you guys are unfair but I understand that sells more newspapers or people click more on your social media when you are posting about these things.

“It's a pity because he's our main goalkeeper, he's the only player since I'm here who's always with Bafana Bafana and that's because of something."

Martin added that had Mothwa’s teammates also played their part, perhaps the attention wouldn’t be on the goalkeeper.

"One of the positive things is that we are a team, we win together, we lose together and when one player makes a mistake the other players hug him and try to encourage him,” the coach added.

“As you were saying, it was not the only mistake of the game, luckily we are not doing the same with the ones who are missing out on clear scoring chances, maybe we are comparing too many goal scoring chances we had, even with that last mistake, we would have won 2-3 and nobody would be talking."
