The Manchester United goalkeeper was named in his country's squad ahead of the tournament, which takes place in the Ivory Coast from January 13.
Cameroon take on Senegal, Guinea and Gambia with their first game against Guinea on 15 January.
The Red Devils are in action against Nottingham Forest on Friday and play Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup third round on Monday, 8 January, and Onana is keen to play his part for his club before linking up with Cameroon.
According to ESPN: "Onana, a £43 million summer signing from Internazionale, has indicated he will participate but, according to a source, wants to limit his time away from Old Trafford as much as possible."
Cameroon are also in action against Saudi Arabia and Zambia in upcoming friendly matches ahead of the tournament.
Onana previously retired from international duty during the World Cup in Qatar before returning in September.
