AS FAR draw sees Mamelodi Sundowns slip to second

Mamelodi Sundowns saw top spot in Group B slip away after conceding late on to draw 1-1 with AS FAR in the CAF Champions League on Sunday evening.

Peter Shalulile had given Sundowns the lead at Loftus after just 12 minutes but El Amine Zouhzouh levelled in the 83rd minute for a share of the spoils.

The result saw the Morrocan side end their group stage campaign in first place with 10 points, to leave the Brazilians in second with nine points.

Raja Casablanca ended in third place ahead of bottom side Maniema Union.

The visiting team were first to threaten in the seventh minute, but Tumisang Orebonye failed to connect to a delivery from the right-hand side.

An in-form Shalulile made no mistake though as he gave Sundowns the lead when he connected to a Lucas Ribeiro set-piece with a header that beat AS FAR goalkeeper Ayoub El Khayati.

Shalulile may well have had a second in the 29th minute but El Khayati was equal to the effort.

Grant Kekana was next to test the keeper from close range as the half wore down but he couldn't convert from close range.

Sundowns maintained their pressure in the second half and Iqraam Rayners thought he had scored with a chip that looked to be beating El Khayati, but the keeper made a fingertip save to keep his team in the tie.

Rabat had a chance to level in the 67th minute from a Zouhzouh cross that Ribeiro clipped the crossbar before flying over the goal.

And just Sundowns looked to have done enough to secure the win, a near post effort in the 83rd minute beat Ronwin Williams to end up in the back of the net and leave the Betway Premiership side fearing a difficult knockout draw.
