Ashley du Preez, inspired by Iqraam Rayners’ solid start at Mamelodi Sundowns

Kaizer Chiefs striker Ashley Du Preez says he’s been inspired by Bafana Bafana striker Iqraam Rayners’ start at Mamelodi Sundowns, where he’s scored 11 goals in 14 matches so far.

Du Preez knows Rayners very well, having played together at Stellenbosch FC and this was before he moved to Chiefs and Rayners joined SuperSport United.

With Rayners scoring regularly ever since he arrived at Sundowns, Du Preez says the 29-year-old has set a good example.

''Iqraam Rayner, I have played with him. I know how he likes to score goals, the way he plays. He has experience and as a player, I do look up to him. I have my eye on how he scores goals. Iqraam Rayners is a good example,'' said Du Preez.

Du Preez is also the kind of a striker who will give you a good return but provided he’s being used effectively.

And, this is how he would prefer to be utilized.

''My preferred playing style - I have pace, I always create opportunities when I am running behind defenders. I think that's what you would see, week in and week out. That's basically how I want to play as a No. 9, and I can play on the left even on the right. My strength is running behind,'' added Du Preez.

There’s also an old notion that players from Cape Town are struggling to settle once they move to Gauteng, but players like Du Preez and Rayners are rewriting that script.

''I don't think so, that players struggle. As you can see I was scoring at Stellenbosch, and for me it is about remaining consistent, and to keep working on that,'' he expressed.

Du Preez has only scored three goals in 10 matches in all competitions so far this season at the club. The entire Chiefs attack, including Ranga Chivaviro and Christian Saile, have been struggling to find the back of the net, and the 27-year-old says they must approach games like this.
