According to SPORT, Alonso's contract with the Blaugrana expires on June 30, potentially making him one of the summer's notable departures.
Arriving in the summer of 2021, Alonso made a significant impact, impressing both at left-back and in central defence. However, this season has been marred by injuries, limiting him to just 300 minutes across seven appearances.
A persistent back issue led to surgery in December, with Barcelona's manager Xavi Hernandez confirming that Alonso still requires another two to three weeks to recover fully. Xavi expressed regret over the timing of the injury, noting that Alonso's absence compounds the team's defensive challenges, particularly with the absence of Alejandro Balde, who is set to miss the rest of the season.
Atletico Madrid, long admirers of the Madrid-born defender, are closely monitoring Alonso's situation. With potential defensive departures looming, including contracts expiring for Axel Witsel and Mario Hermoso, Alonso could be a valuable addition to the squad.
Alonso may follow in the footsteps of compatriot and former Chelsea teammate Cesar Azpilicueta, who joined Atletico from Chelsea after initially being linked with Barcelona.
Barcelona's precarious financial situation necessitates a more frugal approach to transfers and wages. As such, the development of Alex Valle, currently on loan at Segunda Division's Levante, is viewed favourably. Barcelona could potentially rely on Valle, thus freeing up salary space for a replacement should Alonso depart.
The uncertainty surrounding Alonso's future adds intrigue to the upcoming transfer window, with Atletico poised to capitalize on any opportunity to strengthen their defensive line-up.
