The Spanish club previously expressed interest in the Portugal international during the January transfer window but were unable to finalise a deal.
Instead, Cancelo joined Bayern Munich on loan for the remainder of the 2022/23 season.
However, Bayern decided against making the move permanent, and as a result, Cancelo has returned to Manchester City.
Bayern have now turned their attention to Cancelo's City teammate, Kyle Walker, in their pursuit of a new right-back.
It appears that both Cancelo and Manchester City have little desire to continue their association. Manager Pep Guardiola has been adamant about moving Cancelo out of the club.
While Arsenal have also expressed interest in Cancelo, Barcelona have intensified their efforts to secure the player's signature.
Despite their financial uncertainties, any potential deal would need approval from La Liga.
Nonetheless, the probable sale of Ousmane Dembele to PSG would provide Barcelona with the financial flexibility to pursue Cancelo, as acquiring a new right-back is considered one of their top priorities.
