Barcelona shift focus to Champions League after Getafe frustration

Barcelona are still seething after Saturday's controversial 1-1 draw against Getafe, with officiating decisions leaving the club incensed.

Club president Joan Laporta criticised the refereeing earlier in the day, and head coach Hansi Flick has since weighed in on the contentious penalty appeal involving Jules Kounde in the 81st minute.

Turning his attention to the Champions League, Flick is optimistic about securing a vital three points in their next group stage fixture against at Benfica on Tuesday night, which would guarantee their progression to the knockout stages. Flick also took time to praise Angel Di Maria, describing him as one of the most exceptional players he has seen.

"Our objective is to win today's match. It's a huge step for us. Securing three points will confirm our place in the last 16," Hansi Flick has said.

Barcelona currently sit second in their group, but Flick underlined the importance of going further. "It would be fantastic to get those three points and climb to the top."

Hansi Flick also spoke highly of rising star Pau Cubarsi, who has been a standout performer. "Pau has been playing exceptionally well, no matter if it's on the right or left. He's an incredibly important player for us, and he's still not even 18! It's remarkable."

While Flick remains realistic about the challenges ahead, he has not ruled out Barcelona's potential in the Champions League. "Winning the Champions League is one of the hardest achievements in football. We're performing well, but so are many top teams.

"We're fighting on three fronts. In LaLiga, our results could be better, but our overall performances have been excellent. Against Benfica, who are a fantastic team to watch with their style of play, it will be a tough test. Angel Di María is a joy to watch, truly one of my favourite players," he has added.

Flick was asked about the penalty claim involving Jules Kounde and did not hold back his frustration. "Was it or wasn't it? These moments happen in every match. You don't even need VAR to see it was a clear penalty! It's unbelievable."

Hansi Flick also reserved special praise for Wojciech Szczesny, highlighting the goalkeeper's impact both on and off the pitch. "Wojciech Szczesny has been one of our best signings. He's not only brilliant in goal but also a great leader. His support for younger players is invaluable, and he shows his experience in everything he does."

Reflecting on the upcoming fixture at the Estadio da Luz, Flick said: "I have great memories of this stadium, but the past is the past. The atmosphere will be electric, and we need to defend strongly to get a good result."

Despite early setbacks in La Liga, Flick remains determined to compete for the title. "We will fight for the La Liga title and see where we stand at the end of the season. When this team is fully focused, they are absolutely extraordinary."
