Bayer Leverkusen's stand: Florian Wirtz and Xabi Alonso here to stay

Bayer Leverkusen's Fernando Carro has addressed speculation surrounding the future of two key figures in the club — Florian Wirtz and coach Xabi Alonso.

Wirtz, the 20-year-old prodigy, has been a subject of intense transfer rumours, with numerous top clubs expressing interest. However, Carro remains resolute, affirming that Leverkusen anticipate the young talent to continue donning their colours beyond the summer.

Carro emphasized, in an interview with BILD, "There is always an acceptance limit. But Florian's is not only very, very high financially, but also emotionally - for both sides. We are not thinking of selling him." The CEO conveyed confidence in Wirtz's connection to the club, the team, and the coaching staff, pointing to an environment conducive for his continued development.

The Leverkusen chief acknowledged the role success plays in such decisions, stating, "If you can be part of a success story here, there is no need to move to another club." With Leverkusen leading the Bundesliga and competing strongly in the DFB-Pokal and Europa League, the success perspective seems firmly in place.

Similar sentiments were echoed regarding the highly regarded head coach, Xabi Alonso, who has reportedly attracted interest from prestigious clubs, including Real Madrid. Despite the allure of such opportunities, Carro dismissed any notions of Alonso's departure.

"Xabi just renewed his contract in the summer. He is working with a top team and has an excellent organization behind him. We expect him to be our coach next year. There is no reason to think otherwise," Carro asserted, signalling a steadfast commitment to the coach who has played a crucial role in Leverkusen's current success.

As Leverkusen enjoys a remarkable run at the top of the Bundesliga and vie for multiple honours, the message from their CEO is clear ” Wirtz and Alonso are integral to the club's future, and their presence will endure beyond the current season.
