The Nigerian striker, having netted an impressive 16 goals and provided eight assists in 23 appearances for Die Werkself this season, has been sidelined until April due to an abductor injury sustained in preparation for the African Cup of Nations. His absence undoubtedly leaves a void in Leverkusen's attacking prowess, raising questions about their ability to maintain their triumphant form.
Leverkusen's sporting director, Simon Rolfes, acknowledged the significance of Boniface's injury but expressed confidence in the team's depth. Despite the setback, Rolfes clarified to Kicker that the club are not actively seeking a replacement striker in the winter transfer market. Patrik Schick, recently back in the squad after overcoming a two-year injury spell, is seen as a potential solution to fill the gap left by Boniface.
The Czech international has made a notable impact in his fleeting appearances this season, tallying six goals and one assist in just nine outings. His impressive goal contribution rate, averaging one every 41 minutes, signals his capability to step up in Boniface's absence. However, Rolfes is aware of the inherent risks associated with Schick's injury-prone history and acknowledged the club's vigilance:
"It is clear that we are monitoring the situation even more closely - including the course of the next few weeks, what is happening here and at the Africa Cup - and that we are checking out options."
Coach Xabi Alonso faces the challenge of steering the team through a demanding period, with key players on international duty further complicating matters. Leverkusen's pursuit of an unprecedented treble now hang in the balance as they navigate through January and February without the influential presence of Victor Boniface.
The absence of the Nigerian striker not only puts pressure on Schick but also raises questions about the team's overall depth and resilience.
