Despite midweek Europa League concerns and uncharacteristic errors from midfield stalwart Granit Xhaka, Leverkusen's attacking prowess and solid counter-pressing stole the spotlight.
Amidst whispers of a potential dip in form, B04 attacker Jonas Hofmann addressed the scepticism that had crept into the football discourse. "It felt like many expected us to stumble today," Hofmann acknowledged, speaking to German broadcaster DAZN on Sunday after the match. "We coped well. We wanted to stand up and show everyone. We kept control of most of the game, kept the pressure on, were outstanding in our counter pressing, and made life easier for ourselves."
Xhaka, echoing Hofmann's sentiments, highlighted the team's exceptional counter-pressing capabilities. "Our counter-pressing is excellent," stated the Swiss international. "We were brutally compact off the ball. We don't allow much. This helps the attack, which has plenty of freedom in the last 30 meters. You see that every weekend."
While celebrating their attacking prowess, both Hofmann and Xhaka conceded that defensive improvements were needed, particularly on set-pieces. Leverkusen displayed vulnerability in marking during some set-piece plays against Union Berlin, despite their offensive proficiency in dead-ball situations. Hofmann acknowledged, "Defensively, we need to improve somewhat. The importance of set-pieces [on both sides of the ball] can decide games. Xabi [and staff] always prepare us with good variations."
Xabi Alonso's Werkself, currently leading the league, acknowledged the significance of maintaining focus and continuous improvement. Xhaka emphasized, "Excellent to lead the league through the international break, but we must not succumb to dreams or be influenced by outside factors.
"We have to keep our feet on the ground and continue to work hard. We'll then see where we stand. We are still on the right track."
Leverkusen's victory not only secured their position at the top of the Bundesliga but also served as a statement to sceptics. Despite defensive nuances, their attacking prowess and resilience under pressure showcased a team determined to stay grounded and maintain their trajectory.
As the international break looms, Leverkusen send a clear message to their rivals - they are still the team to beat in the Bundesliga.
