Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz leaning towards contract extension

Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz leaning towards contract extension

Florian Wirtz could be set to extend his stay at Bayer Leverkusen, with reports suggesting the midfielder is considering a new contract rather than a summer 2025 exit.

According to Kicker, while Wirtz has been linked to Bayern Munich, there is no indication that the 21-year-old is preparing to leave Leverkusen next year.

Instead, talks between the player and Leverkusen appear to be progressing, with a potential contract extension until 2028 on the table.

This would allow Leverkusen to retain their star player without jeopardising their bargaining position for a future transfer in 2026.

Wirtz has previously spoken about his desire to continue developing at Leverkusen, both as a player and a leader.

Moving to a top European club for a massive fee would introduce new pressures that might not suit him at this stage of his career.

His father and agent, Hans-Joachim Wirtz, emphasised the importance of regular playing time, stating, "A young player needs to be in a team where he can play a lot."

With good communication between the club and the player, all signs point to Wirtz staying at Leverkusen, with the club being the only one he's in talks with for now.
