Behind Thatayaone Ditlhokwe and Given Msimango’s budding partnership

Sticking to the basics and applying the tactics from the head coach is what has kept Kaizer Chiefs’ new centre-back pairing of Thatayaone Ditlhokwe and Given Msimango growing.

Despite conceding five goals in four matches this season, there have been promising signs from this partnership under coach Molefi Ntseki.

Speaking to the media ahead of their DStv Premiership match against AmaZulu at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening, Ditlhokwe says the best way for new players to settle together at a club is to get the basics right.

"I think the most important thing, when you are new or playing with an individual that has been away from your side for a long time, is about sticking to the basics," said Ditlhokwe.

"They say football is universal, so once you know the basics and both of you can communicate on the field, I don't think there's anything that can be much more difficult to stick to what the coach has presented at any given time."

Ntseki has stuck with the back four of Ditlhokwe, Msimango, Sifiso Hlanti, and Reeve Frosler in all their opening games so far.

The Botswana captain says it’s not been easy to review their partnership when results have not been going their way.

"Obviously, I think results have not been on our side, so we can't say we have been doing well while the results are not going our way," he admitted.

"So it's all about working hard each and every game, so that we can turn results around because the most important thing is the result, whether you play well or not, at the end of the day if results are not on your side, there's nothing you can talk about being good."
