Betway Premiership: Stellenbosch's derby demolition highlights Wednesday's action

Stellenbosch claimed the bragging rights in the Western Cape derby with a commanding victory over Cape Town City FC in one of five Betway Premiership matches that took place on Wednesday evening.

Stellenbosch FC 3-0 Cape Town City FC

Stellenbosch delivered an outstanding performance decisively defeating Cape Town City 3-0 in the Western Cape derby at Athlone Stadium.

Steve Barker's squad have now won six of the last nine encounters between the sides with City's last win coming in 2020.

On a chilly evening in Athlone, Stellenbosch found themselves technically in enemy territory, as they are still unable to host matches at Danie Craven Stadium.

Five minutes before halftime, Amadou Soukouna had a free-kick opportunity but sent his effort soaring over the bar. Just before the whistle, the deadlock was finally broken when Stellenbosch capitalized on a defensive error, with Andre De Jong scoring from distance to put his team ahead 1-0.

The second half saw a moment of brilliance from Fawaaz Basadien, who doubled Stellenbosch's lead in the 54th minute with a stunning shot from just inside his own half that sailed over Keet, who managed to get a hand to it but could not prevent it going in.

City responded with a half-chance, but Basadien continued to shine, forcing Keet into another save moments later. In the 61st minute, Sanele Barns extended the lead to 3-0, heading in a well-placed cross.

The match somewhat fizzled out in the last half an hour with City unable to cause any significant problems defensively for their rivals.

SuperSport United 1-0 TS Galaxy

SuperSport United claimed their first victory of the Betway Premiership season with a hard-fought 1-0 win over TS Galaxy at TUT Stadium.

The match began evenly, but the Rockets appeared more energetic in the attacking third, forcing SuperSport into some crucial defensive plays during the opening 20 minutes.

SuperSport had to wait until the final ten minutes of the first half for their first real chance, as Nyiko Mobbie found Terrence Dzvukamanja, whose header from close range sailed wide of the goal.

After a goalless first half, the home side finally broke the deadlock shortly after the hour mark. Dzvukamanja made no mistake this time, firing an impressive strike past Jiri Ciupa for his first league goal of the season.

In the latter stages of the match, the Rockets struggled to find a way back, and Matsatsantsa held on for a well-deserved victory, securing their first three points of the campaign.

It has been a challenging start to the season for Galaxy, suffering back-to-back defeats in the league and extending their losing streak to three matches across all competitions in the 2024/25 season.

Sekhukhune United 1-1 Chippa United

Sekhukhune United and Chippa United could not be separated as the sides played to a 1-1 draw at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The match started at a lively pace and the Chilli Boys took the lead within the first seven minutes as Bienvenu Eva Nga scored with a header from a rebound in the box.

As the first half progressed, Seema's side gained confidence. Just before the interval, Makgalwa had another opportunity, but his shot was expertly smothered by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. Despite their efforts, Sekhukhune's defense held firm, and the teams went into halftime with Chippa leading by a slim margin.

The tide turned early in the second half when Thabang Monare leveled the score for Babina Noko with a close-range header following a well-placed cross from Makgalwa.

Things took a turn for the Chilli Boys just before the hour mark when Sergio Kammies was shown a second yellow card, leaving his team with ten men.

Chippa United managed to absorb the pressure in the closing minutes, successfully frustrating Babina Noko's attempts to find a late winner. Ultimately, the match ended in a hard-fought draw as both teams could not be separated.

Magesi v Golden Arrows - match abandoned

Golden Arrows' clash against Magesi FC was abandoned due to a power failure at Mpumalanga Stadium, leaving the visitors with a 1-0 lead.

The first half saw Magesi create several chances, with Shaquille Abrahams putting an early effort wide in the 19th minute.

A series of corners for the visitors followed, but Arrows' goalkeeper, Edward Maova, dealt with the pressure well.

Arrows found opportunities on the counter, but struggled to break through Magesi's defence, with Wonderboy Makhubu being closely marked and Lungelo Nguse's shot blocked.

In the second half, both teams enjoyed end-to-end action. Maova continued to stand strong, denying Magesi at the near post.

Arrows maintained possession but failed to create clear chances in the final third.

A promising opportunity in the 73rd minute saw Elvis Chipezeze collect a far-post attempt.

Magesi broke the deadlock in the 79th minute, with Makhubu finding the back of the net.

However, the match came to an abrupt halt in the 86th minute when a power outage forced the abandonment of the game, with Magesi leading 1-0.
