Citizens brought back down to earth by Gallants
Marumo Gallants secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Cape Town City in a tense Betway Premiership clash at the Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein.
A decisive first-half penalty by Diala Manaka was enough to give Gallants the edge in a match filled with chances but lacking clinical finishing.
The game sparked into life early, with Gallants' Masindi Nemtajela having a shot blocked in the fourth minute. The breakthrough came in the 12th minute after Gaba Mhango won a penalty, drawing a foul from Cape Town City goalkeeper Darren Keet. Manaka confidently converted, driving his shot into the bottom left corner to put Gallants ahead.
Cape Town City had their moments in the first half, but Thabo Nodada's long-range effort was comfortably saved. The visitors' frustration grew as captain Thamsanqa Mkhize was booked for a reckless challenge in the 21st minute, and Tshegofatso Nyama had to be replaced due to injury shortly after.
Gallants came close to doubling their lead when Nemtajela rattled the crossbar with a thunderous strike in the 26th minute. The hosts continued to press, with Daniel Msendami and Kamohelo Mahlatsi testing Keet, but City's defence held firm to limit further damage before the break.
In the second half, Cape Town City showed more attacking intent. Substitute Haashim Domingo nearly found an equaliser in the 49th minute, but his effort was well saved. Gallants continued to threaten on the counter, with Nemtajela and Msendami leading the charge, but their finishing let them down.
Cape Town City's best chance came in the 87th minute when Nathan Idumba's header narrowly cleared the bar. Amadou Soukouna also missed late on as Gallants held on for a vital win.
The victory lifts Marumo Gallants to 13th in the Betway Premiership standings with 14 points from 13 matches. Cape Town City remain sixth, with 17 points after 13 games.
This result gives Gallants renewed hope in their battle for survival, while City will be left to rue their missed opportunities.
Zungu strike helps Usuthu edge past Magesi
AmaZulu emerged victorious in a closely contested Betway Premiership match against Magesi at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Bongani Zungu's decisive strike in the 53rd minute earned AmaZulu a narrow 1-0 win, lifting them to eighth place in the league standings, though their position remains tentative with other teams holding games in hand.
The match began with AmaZulu dominating possession, but it was Magesi who looked more dangerous in the first half.
Wonderboy Makhubu came closest to breaking the deadlock for Magesi, but he squandered a critical opportunity just before the interval.
The second half saw AmaZulu take control, with Zungu stepping up to score a brilliant goal from outside the box.
Magesi's goalkeeper, Elvis Chipezeze, came under scrutiny for his inability to prevent the strike.
After conceding, Magesi struggled to regain their rhythm, and AmaZulu held firm to secure all three points.
Zungu's performance proved pivotal, marking him as AmaZulu's standout player of the day, while Makhubu's missed chance was a key moment that swung the game in AmaZulu's favour.
With this victory, AmaZulu continued their resurgence in the league, gaining valuable momentum as the season progresses.
