Big-spending Man Utd underperforming more than any other Premier League side

Manchester United have been identified as the biggest underachievers in the Premier League, considering their massive wage bill, according to a report.

Despite having the league's highest payroll expenditure for the 2024-25 season, at £173,750,000, United find themselves 14th in the standings.

Manager Erik ten Hag faces mounting pressure as his side's inconsistent performances continue to frustrate.

The report analysed club payrolls in relation to current league standings.

In contrast to United's struggles, Brighton have emerged as the biggest overachievers. Sitting sixth in the table, the Seagulls, under new manager Fabian Hurzeler, boast a payroll of just £55,982,000.

Brentford, another notable overachiever, sit 11th with a modest payroll of £41,470,000, while Fulham are currently eighth, outperforming their £59,696,000 wage bill.

West Ham, despite underperforming for much of the season, showed promise in a 4-1 win over Ipswich but remain below expectations with a payroll of £81,380,000 under manager Julen Lopetegui.

Liverpool, led by Arne Slot, are currently top of the table, performing above expectations with a payroll of £125,580,000, the fifth highest in the division.

Conversely, Tottenham remain mid-table after an inconsistent start, despite a payroll of £111,826,000.
