Brandon Peterson: Nedbank Cup, an opportunity to turn Kaizer Chiefs' fortunes around

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Peterson believes that the Nedbank Cup presents an opportunity for the club to end their 10-year trophy drought.

Peterson was speaking after the club was drawn against ABC Motsepe league side from Gauteng, Free Agents FC, during the tournament’s Last 32 draw at the Green Bank’s headquarters in Sandton on Thursday night.

Chiefs are the most successful team in this cup competition with 13 trophies, and Peterson hopes they can continue with that tradition in this edition.

"Obviously, you know I think that will be a bit of extra motivation to the guys knowing that at the moment there's only the Nedbank Cup and the league that's still up for grabs. So, I think realistically speaking going for this trophy and trying to change our fortunes and obviously using that as a motivation, as a stepping stone,” Peterson said.

“So, I think this time around I have a feeling it will be quite different and hopefully, God willing, we can go all the way."

The Nedbank Cup’s last 32 stage matches will be played between 25 and 28 January, with dates and venues to be announced at a later stage.

Free Agents are coming as more of a closed book to Chiefs, and Peterson also admitted that he doesn’t know much about them, but he believes that this is the opportunity to turn their fortunes around with this trophy under head coach Nasreddine Nabi.

"To be honest with you, no, it’s the first time tonight I saw that name but I think if the past is anything to go by, I think there's no team you can underestimate in the Nedbank Cup,” he added.

“You know it's full of surprises and hopefully this season, this time around, we can turn our fortunes in the Nedbank Cup and add to that trophy cabinet and to the history of being the most successful club in the Nedbank Cup."
