Brandon Truter advise to footballers after Shaun Mogaila accident

Richards Bay FC coach Brandon Truter has called on footballers to alter their lifestyles following a fatal accident involving Sekhukhune United midfielder Shaun Mogaila.

Mogaila appeared at the Tembisa Magistrate Court on Friday and was released on R20 000 bail, following a crash that killed a 9-year-old girl and injured a 13-year-old boy.

Truter has sent his condolences to the families.

"Yeah, there are so many examples out there from the previous generation. I think the previous generation made every mistake possible in the book, and even the older guys as well,” Truter said.

“The key for me here is learning from it and recognising the temptations that are out there as well. They are athletes, they are constantly in the spotlight, they are entertainers, and the media surrounds them as well.

“That pressure should have a positive outlet, it should not be any alcohol or substance abuse or anything like that. That's where the family comes in, that's where your circle of friends come in and you need to be mindful about who you associate yourself with because when it's happy days, everyone is happy but when it's not so happy, you find one or two only sticking around and advising you.

“But what happened to Shaun our thoughts are with him as well as the family of the people that passed and those who got injured in the accident as well but it's an accident, we don't go out and intentionally hurt anybody.

”With the stories around and the rumours around, I hope it doesn't have a negative impact on his career but everybody is in our thoughts that was involved in that accident. "

The Natal Rich Boys host Cape Town City in the quarterfinals of the Carling Knockout, an opportunity for the team to emulate last year's performance in the same competition.

Truter has spoken about what chairman Jomo Biyela told them about this competition.

"Look, the chairman made it clear for us, if there's any possibility of a cup, he'd like a trophy this season and the Carling Cup and the other cups in the league represents that opportunity,” the coach added.

“The Carling Cup is the first one of the season so yeah once you are in the cup, you need to be in it to win it, that's why we are here. The pressure of being the only representative from KZN, it's an opportunity for growth as well.

“We are a young team, lots of youngsters, yes mixed with some matured players but all this pressure, we welcome it and from there, we'll grow."
