Brandon Truter explains goalie Salim Magoola’s limited game time

Richards Bay FC coach Brandon Truter has admitted it’s not been an easy decision to leave out goalkeeper Salim Magoola out of the starting line-up.

The Ugandan international had attracted interest from rival clubs last season, but opted to renew his contract with the Natal Rich Boys.

However, it is new keeper Ian Otieno who has been preferred in four successive games and Truter explained why.

''It is challenging - managing the group and the club as well, there's some things we need to try to move away from because of what the club has been to - in terms of the relegation threats, we can't be doing the same things over and over and expect different results. Some players have been used to doing things a certain way,'' said Truter.

Magoola was in goal for the opening two matches of the Betway Premiership until he was dropped.

Truter also used midfielder Thabisa Ndelu as an example in managing a squad that has a mix of youth and experience.

''I'm happy with the coachability factor with some guys,  but it is the belief that needs to be instilled. It is a diverse group in terms of personalities. Players have egos and you have to manage them carefully, and we have a few young players. With the example about Ndelu he started of, two starts and Pirates came along -  not a very good five minutes, we took him off at halftime, he was not so happy about it, but he is a young boy coming up, we need to manage the whole process, we left him out last week and sent back him back to DCC, a bit of tough love but he grew from that.  Now we get him back to playing with confidence,'' added Truter.

The coach also wants to see his team play without “fear”, something Truter adds that he’s working hard on after a close shave with relegation last season.

''These are things we need to instill, look it is a team that survived relegation on the last day via the play offs and have a fear to lose. So I say to them the feeling of wanting to win should  be greater than the fear of losing,'' he expressed.

Richards Bay return to league action Sekhukhune United tonight and Truter conceded there was worry over his team struggling to implement their training drills on match day.
