Brandon Truter reacts to Carling Knockout quarterfinal draw

Richards Bay coach Brandon Truter has said they’ve been handed a tough draw in the Carling Knockout quarterfinals, but believes beating Cape Town City would give them a strong chance of winning the tournament.

Truter was reacting straight after the Natal Rich Boys eliminated Sekhukhune United in wet conditions at the King Zwelithini Stadium to progress to the last eight.

City thrashed Royal AM 3-0 to book their spot, and Truter admits they are one of the strong teams in the competition.

"Cape Town City for some reason, for the past three seasons, if I'm not mistaken, three seasons, they started very slowly. I think there was one moment where everybody thought Eric was gonna get fired but three or four seasons now, game five, game six onwards, they kick on,” Tinkler said.

“It's a quality team, you can see the players they possess, the players they sign as well, I think the chairman made it very clear they want to challenge and even the coach as well.

They want to challenge and get into Africa so it's a very difficult draw but if you wanna progress in the cup competitions you have to beat the top teams and face them as well.

“There's no getting around it. We welcome City, it's at our home ground so we have to be very organised against them, with what they produced last night [Saturday night]."

Truter added he was delighted to see his side bounce back from the narrow defeat to Orlando Pirates in the Betway Premiership before the FIFA break.

"Of course, in cup competitions, it's about getting into the next round and that's what we achieved tonight. I'm happy with the efforts we made, it was a tough game with the conditions as well,” the coach added.

“Mthethwa [Tlakusani], Mbuthuma [Yanela], Mthembu [Moses], even Buthelezi [Thando] when they were in the bus, it was tough in terms of going quality for quality so we have to compensate in terms of the work rates.

"On top of that coming into this game, obviously you can see the two set pieces that was the two losses against Pirates and Chippa [United] and with Sekhukhune being so dangerous with the set piece and quality just of the ball and guys that attack the ball aggressively.

“We did not concede from a set piece tonight so that's a plus. I keep on challenging the boys in the team in terms of ticking boxes and setting out our shortcomings and of course so early in the season. It's scary where we can end up."
