Brazil crash out of Women's World Cup as Jamaica make history

Brazil crashed out of the Women's World Cup after being held to a goalless draw by Jamaica with the Carribean side advancing to the knockout stages for the first time.

The Reggae Girlz qualified in second place from Group F behind France, who thrashed Panama 6-3 in their final pool match.

This is the first time in 28 years that Brazil has failed to get through the group stages with players and management looking shell-shocked at the final whistle.

The upset could also signal the end of the international career of Brazilian legend Marta, who is the top scorer in the history of the tournament with 17 goals and is also a six-time FIFA Player of the Year winner.

The South Americans dominated the game and did most of the running but were thwarted by a courageous defensive display by Jamaica.

Needing a point to advance, the Reggae Girlz barely threatened the Brazil goal but were tight in defence, repelling wave after wave of attacks in a frenetic atmosphere in Melbourne.

At the final whistle, the overwhelmed Jamaicans slumped to their knees and roared in joy before forming a circle to dance and sway to the Bob Marley song "One Love".
