The defending DSTV Premiership Champions have been looking to bolster their attack but with their foreign quota exhausted, the Bafana Bafana international provides an ideal option because of his dual citizenship.
Veldwijk joined South Korean K League 1 side Suwon FC on a permanent deal in July 2020 and his contract was terminated in September last year.
During the 2021 K League 1 season he managed to score 18 goals in 32 appearances and had 6 assists.
SABC Sport understands that the club is looking at the player as their new addition, especially with their participation in the CAF Champions League.
Veldwijk was first introduced to the scene by Shakes Mashaba while he was Bafana Bafana coach in 2016, calling him for the first time ahead of the World Cup qualifier against Senegal.
But the lanky forward was an unused substitute and would only later come off the bench to make his debut a few days later in an international friendly against Mozambique in November that year.
Mashaba was to be replaced by Stuart Baxter in 2017 and the Englishman also took a liking to striker and kept him in and around the squad, although it appeared he would not be the leading man upfront.
Veldwijk was a surprise inclusion in Bafana’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations squad in Egypt, making cameo appearances against Cote d’Ivoire, Namibia and Morocco in the group stages.
He also played a part in the knockout stages matches when South Africa eliminated the hosts in the round of 16, but losing out to Nigeria in the quarterfinals.
The free agent is now expected to join Sundowns pending an agreement on the short-term deal currently being negotiated.
