Bundesliga club Werder Bremen investing in grassroots football in SA

Bundesliga side Werder Bremen head of Business Development Dominik Kupilas says they are focused on developing players and coaches here in South Africa.

Werder Bremen are currently hosting coaching clinics in Durban and Cape Town for the next five days.

Speaking exclusively to SABC Sport Kupilas says they are also in the country to look for partnership.

"We have a great league and yes, I'm from the club Werder Bremen, a German football powerhouse. Let's say it's one of the biggest clubs after FC Bayern Munich and BVB Dortmund,” Kupilas said.

“We are here because we are looking for partnerships but first all of all we want to create an impact within the community. We want to give the community something back. We want to develop players to become better football players.

“We want to train coaches to become better coaches and the end result will be good for the local league, which is the PSL because every good young player is a potential player for the PSL clubs.

I know some of the clubs, Kaizer Chiefs, Pirates [Orlando] for sure, AmaZulu FC, Golden Arrows and yeah, I'm quite interested in the PSL."

This is their second visit to South Africa, in 2019 they visited Kaizer Chiefs through the invitation from Ernst Middendorp and Kopilas says they hoping to have a solid discussion with one of the Durban teams for a possible relationship.

"Sure, let's say it's one of our tasks to talk to the other clubs to check potential collaborations between the club of Werder Bremen and one of the South African clubs,” he added.

“We are here in Durban and we have deep talks with the clubs here in Durban but we visited Kaizer Chiefs here back in 2019 when the German coach Ernst Middendorp was the coach.

“There are also strong relationships between the clubs and we are always looking for potential collaborations between clubs."

Dominik Kupilas traveled with their business consultant Sébastien Schachter, who has shared their love for Africa and how the Bundesliga is giving African players opportunities, including former Bafana Bafana Delron Buckley.

"I believe that the Bundesliga is a fantastic hub for African players so you have many players developed in the Bundesliga to top class players. Namely, Delron Buckley for example, he played BVB Dortmund, he played for Arminia Bielefeld on the top-class level,” Schachter said.

“You have currently Boniface [Victor] in Leverkusen who's a very, very strong striker. I can name a lot more but at the end of the day, the quality of African players is amazing.

“There is a huge amount of really top talents and that's one of the reasons why we definitely want to jump into the market to look into developing the kids with the deep details of the game, develop the kids and the coaches to understand the deep details so we produce much more of these players, that's one of the big goals. The quality of the African players and the Bundesliga is a perfect fit."
