Reports from The Telegraph and Sky Germany indicate that both German clubs are keen on securing the services of the 22-year-old midfielder.
Dortmund, in particular, have had their eyes on McAtee for several years, recognizing his potential as a creative force in the number 10 role.
A source at Dortmund stated, "McAtee fits perfectly into our long-term vision for the squad. We have been monitoring him for quite some time."
Meanwhile, Leverkusen view McAtee as a possible future replacement for their star player, Florian Wirtz. Despite Wirtz's expected stay beyond this summer, Leverkusen are planning ahead.
A Leverkusen insider remarked, "We see James as someone who could step into Wirtz's shoes when the time comes."
The interest from these Bundesliga teams comes amid reports that McAtee is not content with his current playing time at Manchester City. Sky Germany has reported, "McAtee is unhappy with his situation at Manchester City, but the club are not keen on letting him go in January."
Man City hold McAtee's contract until 2026, showing their long-term investment in the player.
Both clubs are considering a loan move with an option to buy in January or a permanent transfer in the summer. The transfer could see McAtee's market value debated in millions of pounds or euros, with clubs potentially looking at a significant investment to secure his future.
As of now, no final decisions have been made, but the situation is one to watch as the transfer window progresses.
This interest from top Bundesliga clubs could very well dictate McAtee's next career move, providing him with the first-team opportunities he seeks while potentially bolstering the attacking options for either Dortmund or Leverkusen.
