Despite Sundowns entering the tie as favourites following their triumph in the African Football League this season, they faced a resilient challenge from last season's CAF Confederation Cup finalists, Yanga, in Dar es Salaam.
In the first half, Sundowns dominated possession, yet they struggled to convert this advantage into clear-cut chances.
Ronwen Williams, operating effectively as a sweeper keeper, ensured Sundowns remained solid defensively.
The second half saw Yanga displaying more attacking intent, especially through the creativity of Stephane Aziz Ki.
However, Ki's promising moments were thwarted twice by Sundowns' high off-side line, denying him clear goal-scoring opportunities.
As the match progressed, both teams had opportunities to break the deadlock. Clement Mzize and substitute Tapelo Morena missed golden chances to snatch a lead for their respective sides, highlighting the lack of clinical finishing.
Looking ahead, Sundowns will host the Tanzanian Premier League champions in the decisive second leg at Loftus Versfeld next week Friday, setting the stage for an intriguing showdown as both teams aim for a spot in the semi-finals.
