CAF Champions League: Sundowns triumph in thrilling comeback win over Maniema

Mamelodi Sundowns secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over AS Maniema Union in their CAF Champions League Group B clash on Saturday afternoon.

The match, held at the Stade de Martyrs in the capital, unfolded under sweltering heat and challenging conditions on an artificial surface.

AS Maniema Union struck first, with Japhte Kitambala toe-poking the ball past CAF Goalkeeper of the Year Ronwen Williams shortly before half-time.

This marked a bright start for the hosts, who were seeking their first-ever group-stage win after three draws and one defeat in their debut campaign.

However, the South African giants turned the tide in the second half, largely thanks to substitute Peter Shalulile.

Entering the game with immediate impact, Shalulile headed in the equaliser with his very first touch.

The match remained tightly contested until the dying moments when Shalulile forced an own goal in the 96th minute, sealing the win for Sundowns with the last kick of the game.

The result lifts Mamelodi Sundowns back into second place in Group B, keeping their qualification hopes alive.

They now turn their focus to their final group-stage match at Loftus Versfeld, where they face Botola Pro side Raja Casablanca, with the groupâ™s top spot at stake.

Meanwhile, AS Maniema Union will reflect on a spirited but ultimately heartbreaking performance in their maiden group-stage campaign.
