Caf defends the decision behind final venue

Publications have reported that Confederation of African Football (Caf) has defended final venue decision amid backlash.

After Caf announced the decision to take the African Champions League final to Casablanca Morocco, the public and well-known figures in the sport fraternity fumed and bashed the African football's ruling body online.

Reaction to the decision has seen the hashtag #stopcafcorruption trend online globally on Twitter, with implications that African football's ruling body had purposely selected Morocco to boost Wydad's chances should they reach the final - which Caf has rejected.

Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane also took it to twitter and asked 'What is this all about?' above a graphic showing the hashtag trending globally on Twitter.

When the Caf Champions League group stages games were finished, rumours were saying SA is hosting.Hao,jikijiki, after semifinals game were decided, there was a loud silence on the country to host the final. Then after the first leg of the semi finals, suddenly Morocco is hosting.?— Pitso Mosimane (@TheRealPitso) May 10, 2022

In their defense BBC Africa has stated that CAF responded and said it had no other candidates to host the game:

"A few months ago, four to five countries expressed interest in hosting the final but only two candidates properly came through,"

"We wanted more countries to bid, because the final is often between those from Morocco and Egypt. So it was fantastic to receive the Senegal bid, but they withdrew." BBC Africa has indicated.

The confirmation that Morocco would host the one-off encounter for the second year running came on Monday after Senegal pulled out last week.
