CAF increases CAF Women’s Champions League prize money

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has increased the prize money for teams participating in the 2024 edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League, scheduled to kick off in Morocco on Saturday, 9 November.

All eight teams in the tournament are guaranteed at least 150 thousand USD (just over R2.6m) each, depending on where they finish in the competition.

The continental football governing body has upped the prize money by an impressive 52 percent.

“CAF is committed to developing and growing Women’s Football in Africa and the objective of President Motsepe is to invest in Youth Academies for boys and girls and to continue increasing prize monies of all CAF Competitions to make them globally competitive and attractive,” said CAF in a statement.

Now in its fourth edition, the CAF Women’s Champions League winners will walk away with 600-thousand USD (just above R10.4m), while the runners up will pocket 400-thousand USD (about R7m).

Third overall in the tournament will be 350-thousand USD richer (just over R6m), while fourth place will be handed a 300-thousand USD cheque (a little over R5m).

CAF has ensured there is something for everyone, and the two teams finishing third in their groups will earn 200-thousand USD (close to R3.5m) each while the pair ending bottom of the table will grab 150-thousand USD each. 

The eight teams battling it out for gold in Morocco are Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies (South Africa), AS FAR (Morocco); University of the Western Cape (South Africa), Edo Queens (Nigeria), TP Mazembe (DR Congo), FC Masar (Egypt), Aigles de la Medina (Senegal) and CBE FC (Ethiopia)

Sundown Ladies are the defending champions, while AS FAR are the only other team to have won the tournament, which runs from 9 -23 November in the cities of El Jadida and Casablanca.
