It’s understood the two parties have reached a deadlock in their own negotiations to keep the U20 right back on the books of the Urban Warriors beyond the end of the current campaign – even if they are promoted back to the Betway Premiership.
Spurs were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship in May and despite attempts by their topflight rivals to lure their best assets, Spurs were still able to hold on to a few, Nkwali being one of them.
They did, however sell centre back Rushwin Dortley to Kaizer Chiefs as well as captain Chumani Butsaka and striker Ashley Cupido to Stellenbosch FC.
SABC Sport understands there had been talks behind the scenes between Spurs and Nkwali over a new contract, however with the discussions seeing those involved drift apart in reaching an agreement, the club is resigned to losing the player.
Indications are that, in the interest of his progress and the team that gave him his first taste of professional football, Nkwali would be sold in the upcoming January transfer window – at the right price.
Spurs, it’s believed, have already received at least one offer, but turned it down as it did not meet their valuation of their 19-year-old defender who is part of the Amajita squad that last month qualified for next year’s U20 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON].
Nkwali would be free to leave on a free transfer in June next year unless there’s a U-turn and the player puts pen to paper on a new deal.
