Amakhosi have had multiple different captains this season, from Yusuf Maart, Keagan Dolly, Itumeleng Khune, Given Msimango, and now Thatayoane Ditlhokwe – the latter having donned the armband in Sunday’s 1-1 draw away to Usuthu.
Johnson defended their decision to rotate the captaincy had nothing to do with challenges in leadership, but rather showing that the club has many players capable of leading.
"No, I think there are about three of four captains in the Chiefs camp, and Yusuf is one, Msimango is another, Keagan is one, Itu is another, and TT is one of them as well," said Johnson.
"So whoever is on the pitch, whoever they've picked as [most] senior in the pecking order, he gets the captaincy, and unfortunately all the other players are out, either injured or on the bench, so TT is the one that has to take the responsibility.
"It's got nothing to do with him having just come back [into the team], why is he the captain? That's not the cloth that we use."
Following their latest stalemate, Amakhosi remain eighth on the DStv Premiership table, and the coach has labelled their final two fixtures against Polokwane City and Cape Town Spurs cup finals as they battle to hold onto their MTN8 spot.
"At the moment, like I said the week before last, it's about winning every game, and the top eight [finish] is very important to the club," he added.
"You ask how vital? It's very vital to take the next two games as cup finals, and we've tried to do that in the last six games, and you could see last week and this week's game, I don't think the team is playing bad football – our problem is putting it in the back of the net."
