Cavin Johnson explains Kaizer Chiefs vision for Ranga Chivaviro

Kaizer Chiefs need to improve how they utilise centre-forward Ranga Chivaviro, and how his teammates come to the party, according to interim coach Cavin Johnson.

The former Marumo Gallants striker, who arrived in Naturena at the beginning of the season, finally scored his first goal in Amakhosi colours in their 3-2 win over Cape Town Spurs last week.

Speaking after the 1-0 loss in the Soweto derby, the 65-year-old, who has overseen the club’s last three matches – losing twice and winning once, believes more involvement of players around Chivaviro could greatly benefit the team.

"There are a lot of moments where you can see we try to use him, and we tried to use him against Thapelo [Xoki], knowing what type of player Ranga is, because then automatically two players are out of the game," said Johnson.

"So we [would have] had nine players and they only eight players, so we need to bring the ball to him quicker, but that was not happening.

"So we're happy with where he is, and we just have to, like somebody eluded to, have composure on the ball, and we need to make the right choices in passing so we can get the ball to Ranga.

"But it will take time and, you've seen, sometimes in the games we're able to get there, but not as often as I'd like us to get there."

A lot has also been made out of Johnson’s statement that he doesn’t believe in systems, but also explained his tactics for this game, like the role he wanted Nkosingiphile “Mshini” Ngcobo to play, as well as his substitutions.

"Football is not played with systems, but at the same time, when you look at how Mshini played, we want wanted him to play a little different role – not as a full number-10 but a little bit off, so that we could get Castillo in at the back," he explained.

"But it didn't work, so we had to do something else, and that's when we put on Mmodi, Saile, and 'Shaba' [Mduduzi Shabalala]."
