With both Yusuf Maart and Edson Castillo suspended for the DStv Premiership clash away to The Citizens, the Amakhosi mentor recalled Sithebe and handed him only his second appearance this season.
The former AmaZulu star, whose contract ends on 30 June, made enough of an impression for Johnson to claim he might keep his place.
"No, I don't know why he's only played one game, I think since I'm there he's been waiting in the wind, he's been waiting to play and today [Saturday], he gets his chance. I have to give him credit, 10 out of 10, he's done well today and maybe he stays there for the next 10 games. I've always said this, I will try and give everybody an opportunity to play while I'm here and if they play and do well then it shows you why the club actually bought them initially,” Johnson said.
Johnson says though the decision to start Sithebe was due to the regulars being unavailable, Sithebe reminded the technical team of his quality.
"You make a good observation in the games previously Castillo and Maart were keeping him out of the team, so, the fact that they're not available gives him an opportunity and when that comes, I don't know if Castillo and Maart will ever come back. He played well, so we're gonna have to see who the next opponent is," he added.
Chiefs return to action on Tuesday and host high-flying Stellenbosch FC, who thumped Royal AM 3-0 while the Soweto side dropped points against City.
Johnson admits it will be tempting to consider Maart and Castillo because of the quick turnaround of fixtures.
"It's right, it's only fair, what he says is true, it's not rock science to think of those things, they're probably fresher than him now, in 48 hours they will still be fresher than him. Castillo has just come back from a nice tour in America, he's played against Italy, he played against Guatemala and Yusuf has been fasting and you know Muslims with the fast, it makes them stronger. So, we'll see."
