Chidozie Awaziem strengthens FC Cincinnati's defence in major transfer

Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has completed his move from Boavista to FC Cincinnati, joining his compatriot Obinna Nwobodo in the USA.

FC Cincinnati have been keen on securing the Nigerian centre-back, with negotiations reaching an advanced stage during the summer transfer window.

Awaziem has been a crucial player for Boavista in the 2023-24 Liga Portugal season, where he made 24 appearances and provided one assist.

His solid performances caught the attention of Cincinnati's scouts, leading to a determined effort to bring him on board.

Major League Soccer reporter Tom Bogert confirmed the transfer, highlighting Awaziem's new role in strengthening Cincinnati's defence.

This news was further supported by FC Cincinnati's official reporter, Pat Brennan, who noted that Awaziem would be filling the gap left by Matt Miazga, a United States Men's National Team defender currently out with an injury.

Awaziem's move is expected to bolster Cincinnati's defensive line significantly. His reunion with fellow Super Eagles star Nwobodo, who has a contract with the club until 2025, adds another layer of excitement for the team's fans.

Awaziem's departure from Boavista marks the end of his long association with the Portuguese club, where he had played since 2014. He leaves behind fellow Nigerians Ibrahim Alhassan and Bruno Onyemeachi at Estádio do Bessa.

Boavista had initially acquired Awaziem from Belgian club Beerschot VA.

The former Nigeria youth international has reportedly signed a two-year contract with FC Cincinnati, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2025-26 season.

His experience and defensive prowess are expected to make a significant impact as Cincinnati aim to improve their standing in Major League Soccer.
