Chippa Mpengesi: Our ultimate goal is survival
Chippa United chairman Siviwe Chippa Mpengesi says the ultimate goal of the club is to survive relegation and retain their R70-million Premier Soccer League elite division status.
Mpengesi spoke exclusively to SABC Sport following their hard-fought 3-3 draw against Richards Bay FC at Bidvest Stadium over the weekend.
After seeing his team fight back from 2-0 and 3-1 down to finish this game with the scores level, he says this result allows them to prepare peacefully for the resumption of the domestic game after the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Going into the FIFA World Cup-enforced recess, Chippa are sitting in sixth spot on the DStv Premiership log with 18 points from 13 games, and will need at least 12 points from the remaining 17 matches this season to be assured of their status.
For head coach Morgan Mammila and his technical team, this was a good result according to Mpengesi.
Look we have this break now at least it gives us something to plan and work on, said Mpengesi.
We got two months now with my technical team, the last thing we did not want is to go on break while you know you have lost, it makes you to take a lot of desperate decision in terms of signing players, you know thinking whether the technical team is the right one to carry you.
We remember our ultimate goal is to survive the relegation, a top 8 is bonus, our ultimate goal is to survive relegation.
Known as the trigger-happy chairman when it comes to the firing of coaches from his club, Mpengesi says his fear is always losing the only elite division team in the Eastern Cape.
Look thats suppose to be ultimate goal, but we must have a deal - its good to have ambitions but for me what is important is to keep Eastern Cape province have a PSL team, so that our people there they can watch their teams, Mpengesi added.
Really other ambitions winning things, yes if that happen, we want but one thing we cant afford to risk is to lose the status because its possible.
