Chuene Morifi honoured by second SAFJA Award nomination

Beylerbeyi SK left-winger Chuene Morifi says it’s an honour to be nominated for the South African Football Journalists’ Association Awards (SAFJA) for a second year in a row.

Morifi is vying alongside four Hollywoodbets Super League stars, including JVW FC’s Kaylin Swart and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies’ Boitumelo Rabale for the 2023 SAFJA Women’s Footballer of the Season.

Speaking to SABC Sport, she says she is pleased that her hard work has been recognised by some of the top football journalists in the country.

"It's always an honour to be nominated for the South Africa Football Journalists' Association Award, I think this is the second time in a row that I've been nominated," said Morifi.

"So I think it's good, it shows that my hard work is being recognised by the top journalists in South Africa, and to be nominated amongst my fellow footballers in the country, who are really working hard and are top footballers – for me it's really an honour."

The 33-year-old further shared a special message to her fellow nominees and wished them well ahead of the awards ceremony.

"To my fellow nominees, I wish you all the best for the [SAFJA] Awards, and may the best women's footballer win," she stated, before sharing her experience in Turkey thus far.

"It's been good, we've played three games so far and we've won all of them. The league is tough, I'm not going to lie, it's more physical and for me it's a challenge.

"It's been difficult, but I think the technical team has been helping me gain my confidence, developing me in terms of showing me and giving me constructive guidance and criticism.

"So, so far it's been good – three games, nine points, and I thank God that I was able to help the team to collect those points."
