With Atletico set to face Valencia at the Metropolitano this Sunday, Lenglet is emerging as a strong candidate to be included in Diego Simeone's line-up.
During recent training sessions, Simeone has been focusing heavily on the defensive setup, with Lenglet being tested as a left-sided centre-back. He alternated between positions with Cesar Azpilicueta, who was also trialled on the right side of defence, alongside Axel Witsel.
Simeone used the sessions to examine various defensive combinations, with Lenglet featuring prominently alongside Jose Gimenez. Rodrigo Riquelme operated as the left wing-back, while Marcos Llorente took the right wing-back position.
Although the return of key defenders Robin Le Normand and Reinildo to group training is still awaited, Lenglet's performance in training has put him in contention for a debut.
The competition for places in defence is heating up, with Azpilicueta and Reinildo both vying for spots, but Lenglet's recent form gives him a real chance to make his mark in the upcoming fixture.
Lenglet joined Athletic in a loan deal from FC Barcelona in August this year.
In a positive development for Atletico, goalkeeper Jan Oblak's involvement with his national team against Kazakhstan earlier this week has eased concerns over his availability.
Meanwhile, back-up keeper Juan Musso, who had been sidelined with a lumbar injury sustained during the match against Athletic Bilbao, has returned to full training under goalkeeping coach Pablo Vercellone, signalling he is also fit for selection.
With Lenglet impressing in training and key players returning to fitness, all eyes are on Atletico's defence ahead of the crucial clash with Valencia. Fans will be eager to see if Lenglet's solid performances can earn him a place in Simeone's plans as he prepares to make his first appearance in the red and white stripes.
