Colombia and Morocco reach knockout stage at FIFA Women's World Cup

Colombia and Morocco confirmed their places in the knockout stages of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup after a thrilling day of football.

Morocco's Atlas Lionesses secured a 1-0 victory over Colombia at the Perth Rectangular Stadium, while Germany, considered a strong contender, were held to a surprising 1-1 draw by South Korea.

Morocco wasted no time and started with determination, testing Colombian goalkeeper Catalina Perez within the first minute. Perez showcased her skills with an instinctive near-post save, but Colombia grew into the game as the first half progressed.

Just as the first-half seemed to be heading to end all square, Morocco got a golden opportunity from a penalty after Daniela Arias brought down Ibtissam Jraidi. Although Perez made a stunning save, Anissa Lahmari capitalized on the rebound to give Morocco the 1-0 lead.

Colombia fought back strongly in the second half, putting pressure on Morocco's defence. Khadija Er-Rmichi's impressive saves denied Colombia from equalizing, and they came agonizingly close when Mayra Ramirez hit the post from a difficult angle.

Despite the loss, Colombia tops Group H on goal difference and will move to the Round of 16 as the group winners. Their next challenge will be facing Jamaica in a thrilling encounter.

Meanwhile, Morocco's historic journey continues as they face France in their first-ever competitive clash. This match provides an opportunity for revenge, as it marks their first meeting with Les Bleues since a 6-0 friendly defeat in 2008.

The Atlas Lionesses look eager to prove themselves against the formidable French team and continue their impressive World Cup run.

The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup has seen thrilling matches and exciting upsets, and with Colombia and Morocco progressing to the knockout stages, the excitement only promises to grow further.
