Colombia stun Germany in Sydney thriller

Colombia produced one of the shocks of the Women's World Cup with a 2-1 victory over Germany.

The Colombians had the first chance of the match in the eighth minute when a corner was pinged to the back post by Catalina Usme and the towering Mayra Ramirez's header down went wide.

Germany had their first chance of the match four minutes later when Chantal Hagel's free-kick delivery found Alexandra Popp, who headed well wide under pressure from three defenders.

The Germans were beginning to pull the strings - dominating possession - while the South Americans were playing a physical brand of football and trying to intimidate their opponents.

Die Nationalelf had their next opportunity in the 22nd minute. Lena Oberdof threaded it through with the ball eventually falling to Lina Magull, who kicked thin air from close range as the chance went abegging.

The Europeans came ever so close to taking the lead on the stroke of half-time when Oberdorf's cross fell to Popp, who mishit her volley over the bar from close range in acres of space.

Colombia took the lead against the run of play five minutes after the interval. A shot was blocked, it fell to Linda Caicedo who jinked past two challenges and fired a brilliant effort in to the top corner from inside the box.

A German corner was cleared straight to Oberdorf, whose volley skewed narrowly wide.

The Germans equalised in dramatic fashion in the 90th minute. Oberdorf was brought down illegally in the box and Popp made no mistake as she fired straight down the middle and into the back of the net.

However, there was still one final twist as Colombia scored in the sixth minute of stoppage time when Marcela Restrepo headed home from a corner to send the South Americans into delirium.
