Cup-winning habit all Kaizer Chiefs needs - Nasreddine Nabi

Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi says returning to the habit of winning trophies is important for the club as they set their sights on the Nedbank Cup.

Chiefs will battle it out for a place in the semi-finals against Stellenbosch FC at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Saturday.

Now in their 10th year since their last piece of silverware, Nabi says it’s not just about Amakhosi returning to CAF inter-club competitions, but how they get there that matters.

"We have to play both sides [in the league and cup], the difference is not big between our position and third in the league [Sekhukhune United] – there's only three points so it's largely in our hands," said Nabi.

"For the cup, we have to do everything – it's Kaizer Chiefs, it doesn't mean that it's only possible to go to CAF competitions through the Nedbank [Cup], no.

"We want, as a big club like Kaizer Chiefs, to go back to winning trophies, even if we don't go anywhere, but to go back to having the habit of winning trophies."

This will be the third meeting between Chiefs and Stellies this season, with the Soweto side having already won both league encounters, but the Tunisian tactician says those results count for nothing in this knockout clash.

"It's true that we are playing against a big team that is still in the CAF Confederation Cup this season, with an experienced technical team," he added.

"We believe it's going to be a very tough game, we don't believe for one second that the last two positive results we got against them are going to count on this one.

"Even those [matches] were very tight, and we expect a very tough game, but we are here to defend our chances [of winning the cup], and we will do everything possible to put in a good performance and try to go as far as we can in the Nedbank Cup."
