Decision made on Jody February future at Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns have exercised their one-year option to keep goalkeeper Jody February on their books, SABC Sport can confirm.

Despite only making one appearance since joining The Brazilians from Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs) in July 2019 under coach Pitso Mosimane, the ex-youth international will remain at the club to maintain depth in their last line of defense.

After being signed by Sundowns five years ago, February was sent out on loan to lower division outfit Cape Umoya for regular game time, as Kennedy Mweene and Denis Onyango were still first and second choice respectively.

But, with the two veterans now seemingly in the twilight of their careers – Mweene already being part of the coaching department at Chloorkop, it was felt February would soon take over between the sticks in the years to come.

Although that is yet to be the case, following the arrival of Ricardo Goss and Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams, the fact the club has triggered the option on his initial deal to avoid his exit suggests there remains plans for February at the Tshwane outfit.

Still only 28 years old, the goalkeeper spent the second half of the 2022/23 campaign on loan at AmaZulu to compete with Bafana Bafana reserve goalkeeper Veli Mothwa for the number-one jersey.

February will continue to face stiff competition at Sundowns, battling for a place in the starting line-up against Williams, Onyango and Reyaad Pieterse.

Meanwhile, Goss is also expected back from his two-year loan spell with Tshwane rivals SuperSport United to give coach Rulani Mokwena more options.
