Denwin Farmer: Ronwen Williams is one of the best goalkeepers globally

Outgoing Cape Town Spurs defender Denwin Farmer says newly-crowned PSL Footballer of the Season, Ronwen Williams has easily placed himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the world this past season.

Williams became only the third goalkeeper in the PSL era to win this award after Andre Arendse and Itumeleng Khune, getting the most votes among the 16 coaches in top-flight football. He beat off competition from his teammates at Mamelodi Sundowns Teboho Mokoena and Stellenbosch FC striker Iqraam Rayners to win this award. Farmer says Williams’ consistency at Bafana Bafana and Sundowns is there for everyone to see.

''For me, he's been spectacular - it's like when you're watching him he doesn't make any mistakes, he's on another level this year. I think he should be one of the best across the world not only in Africa, especially this season the things he has accomplished. The way he has been playing at club level in the national team. Some players shy away either at national team or club level -   but he's been doing it for both. Now he is bringing it back to the community, the youngsters look up to him - it is the first of many more to come,'' said Farmer.

As Farmer, who is already on his way out from the relegated Spurs team, contemplates his future, he shares his dreams and ambitions. He envisions himself joining an ideal team in the PSL, with the pre-season just around the corner..

''I am not sure yet, I will have to wait and see. I am working hard on and off the field, so we just wait for the next opportunity to come. I want to get enough game time in the PSL again, especially being without a club for a few months, not having a proper preseason - just getting in with the team, it takes time, sharpness is not 100%. So I'm looking forward to the season to getting my kick back and starting to be myself again,'' added Framer.

Farmer, a former SuperSport United and Baroka FC player, joined Spurs midway through the season. He was one of the experienced players brought in by head coach Ernst Middendorp to save the Brave Warriors from an immediate return to the National First Division (NFD). He says they did their best to retain the top-flight status, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.

Middendorp, who has already committed to Spurs again as they prepare for life in the lower division, is seen by many as a complex and challenging coach to please, but Farmer also reveals that he gets the best out of his players.
